Improvement of Self-Starting Capabilities of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines with New Design of Turbine Blades

چکیده
A lift-driven vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) generates peak power when it is rotating at high tip-speed ratios (TSR), which time the blades encounter angles of attack (AOA) over a small range from zero to 30 degrees. However, its ability self-start dependent upon performance low TSRs, AOAs 180 novel vented aerofoil presented with intention improving VAWT TSRs without hampering TSRs. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation used predict aerodynamic characteristics new based on well documented NACA0012 profile. Simulations are performed using SST turbulence model. The results obtained show reduction in coefficient tangential force (the that torque turbine) (less than 90 degrees) no more 30%, while (more an improvement 100% observed. Using simple momentum prediction model, these suggest this would lead increase generation by theoretical three-bladed up 20% and minor 9% TSR 2 closer 1% higher

Application of Circulation Controlled Blades for Vertical Axis Wind Turbines
The blades of a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) rotor see an inconsistent angle of attack through its rotation. Consequently, VAWT blades generally use symmetrical aerofoils with a lower lift-to-drag ratio than cambered aerofoils tailored to maximise horizontal axis wind turbine rotor performance. This paper considers the feasibility of circulation controlled (CC) VAWT blades, using a tangent...

متن کاملInverse Design of Blade Shapes for Vertical Axis Wind Turbines
An inverse design process is applied to determine blade shapes used in vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs). The method is based on the modified Garabedian-McFadden technique that uses the deviation of the pressure distribution or the velocity distribution on the surface from a target pressure or velocity distribution, and modifies the blade surface in order to reduce this deviation. The method ...
